Two teams sitting at 3-2 meet on Thursday night in the thin air of Denver, and the matchup sets a strong Seattle defense against a Broncos offense that has struggled to find a rhythm.

Seattle: Elite Defense, Shaky Ball Security

The Seahawks arrive off a heartbreaking 32-29 loss to San Francisco. Sam Darnold threw for 195 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-29 passing, but two interceptions undercut the effort. Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the bright spot with 102 yards on five catches, while Emanuel Wilson led a quiet ground game with 61 yards on 20 carries.

The offense has been productive overall at roughly 27 points per game, but turnovers are a concern: nine giveaways through five games, including five interceptions. The running game ranks in the middle of the pack at about 106 yards per contest.

The defense is where Seattle shines. The unit is allowing around 21 points a game and leads the league in both total yardage (about 251 per game) and passing yardage allowed (roughly 151 per game). Opposing quarterbacks have found very little room to work, with just eight passing touchdowns surrendered. The run defense has been solid too, conceding under four yards a carry.

Denver: A Defense That Keeps Them in It

The Broncos come in off a 23-17 win over the Chargers, though the offense didn’t do much to earn it. Bo Nix managed just 123 yards on 16-of-27 passing with a touchdown and no turnovers, averaging a modest 4.6 yards per attempt. J.K. Dobbins ran for 68 yards on 18 carries, and Evan Engram caught four passes for 55 yards. Denver gained only 224 total yards on the night.

That performance is in line with the season-long picture. The Broncos score about 19 points per game, 26th in the league, and sit near the bottom in total offense at roughly 269 yards per outing. The passing game averages under 183 yards, and the ground attack is producing just 86 yards a game.

Defensively, Denver is respectable, allowing about 22 points per game with seven takeaways. The weak spot is the run defense, which is giving up over 145 yards per game on the ground, and the unit has spent a lot of time on the field.

Trends Worth Knowing

  • Denver has gone under in four of its five games, while Seattle’s games have leaned over, 3-2.
  • The Broncos are 2-0 against the spread at home this season.
  • Seattle coach Mike Macdonald is 13-5-1 ATS on the road in his tenure, and the Seahawks are 11-1-1 ATS in their last 13 road games against teams with a winning home record.
  • Seattle has covered six straight as a road underdog, though this week they’re the favorite, where they are 1-1 ATS this season.
  • The over has hit in each of the last four meetings in Denver, but the under is 4-0 in Seattle’s last four road games against teams with winning home records.
  • Denver is 4-0 ATS in its last four as a home underdog and in its last four as a favorite.

Prediction

Seattle’s pass defense should make life difficult for a Denver offense that has struggled to move the ball, and the Seahawks’ ability to score will be the difference. The one thing that could swing this is turnovers, since Seattle has been careless with the football, but Denver’s limited offense may not be able to capitalize. With Macdonald’s strong road record backing them up, the Seahawks get the narrow win and cover.

Pick: Seahawks -2.5
