Due to the unusual nature surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL has opted to go away from the Eastern and Western Conferences this season and instead divide into four divisions. The league has split into East, Central, West, and North, with the final division employing only Canadian teams.

The top four teams from each division will make the Stanley Cup playoffs, while those four clubs from each division will play in the first two rounds of the postseason ( 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3). The teams to make it out of the four divisions will then be reseeded by points in a 1 vs. 4, 2 vs. 3 format to determine who will play for the Stanley Cup Final.
